There are other ways to get a rope in a tree beside climbing the tree. Using a ball and a throwline is difficult to perfect but can save time and potentially, the life of a tree climber.

Sometimes it is too windy to climb trees. Sometimes limbing a tree while climbing will damage structures or plants below the tree. Otherwise, using a ball and throwline can be quicker, safer, and easier. This all assumes, you have a good arm.

Climbing, limbing, and attaching a rope to the top of a tree may take around a half an hour. A tree cutter who is good with a ball and throwline may get a rope in a tree in less than 10 minutes. If they catch a good limb on the first try, the whole process only takes 2 or 3 minutes.

As always, this is a lot harder than it looks. Just ask Bob…

If a tree can’t be dropped whole, it will need to be climbed, limbed, and topped. The ground crew waits below to remove and chip branches after they are cut.

Limbing while climbing is one of the most dangerous parts of the job. If a tree climber cuts there rope while cutting a branch, they will be stuck in the top of a tree with their boot spikes and a prayer.

Tree topping while climbing is probably the most dangerous part of the job, especially on windy days. A tree climber can do everything right, but if a wind gust comes along at the wrong time, the tree-top can fall in the wrong direction – sometimes bring the tree climber down with it.

Also watch how the tree op sways back and forth once the top falls. Once the top starts falling, you’ll notice the tree climber quickly cut through the base of the top. If they leave a hinge connecting the tree-top to the tree, the tree-top may not break off, but swing down and slam back into the tree.

Needless to say, you’ll pay more to get a tree down if it has to be climbed, limbed, and topped…

This tree was too large to be dropped whole from the bottom. We used the bucket truck to limb, top, and cut the tree down to a manageable size. Then we attach a rope to the top, cut it from the bottom, and our ground crew pulls it down.

Notice how we lay other log sections on the ground perpendicular to the drop path. These absorb the force from the top of the tree striking the ground. Cutting and felling a tree is similar to swinging a baseball bat – the majority of the force is focused towards the tip of the tree.

If these logs weren’t there to absorb the force, the tree top may crack driveways, sidewalks, or cause excess damage to the yard.

After a tree is topped, our ground crew will use a winch to pull the top of the tree into the wood chipper. Our wood chippers can turn any tree less than 12″ in diameter into wood chips.

Each chip truck holds around 11 cubic yards of wood chips. Any wood chips not wanted by the homeowner are brought back to our log yard to be sold.

All other logs are loading onto a log truck and taken to the mill to be used for lumber or paper products. We cut these logs into 12′ 6″ or 16′ sections to prepare them for the mill.

Every tree is 100% recycled into wood chips, lumber, or firewood.

Watch our wood chipper tear through this large Poplar tree within a matter of seconds. Heavy duty tree service equipment is expensive but will cut the job-time in half. Always find out what kind of equipment a tree service will be using. There is a huge difference between a 6″, 9″, and 12″ chipper.

Our wood chippers can handle any tree less than 12″ in diameter. All other logs are loading onto a log truck and taken to the mill to be used for lumber or paper products.

We removed 35 large 100′ Pine trees in two days, including grinding all the stumps. This would have taken a week or more without a powerful wood chipper.

Check out our stump grinder in action in some of the other videos. Grinding 35 stumps with anything else would take a day and half whereas our remote-operated Carlton stump grinder only took two hours.

A fire pit is an open burning bowl, whereas a chiminea is built with a chimney. The outdoor fireplace products on the market that have mesh wrap-arounds, multi openings or bowl designs should be considered fire pits. There are many fire pits incorrectly advertised as chimineas, but they are not chimineas. A chiminea will have a flue or chimney that drafts properly much like an indoor fireplace. The drafting on a chiminea naturally brings fresh air into the fire and directs smoke up, away from guests.

Fire pits have a tendency to be hard to light and smoke and smolder due to not having a neck or flue for proper drafting. Fire pits also have safety concerns regarding the possibility of a sudden gust of wind blowing embers into dry grass, deck, or a neighbors property. The Blue Rooster chimineas are designed similar to the traditional spanish fireplaces that have been made for over 400 years. Traditional design chimineas will get used more often than firepits due to easy lighting and ability to be lit in windy conditions. Anyone who has experienced burning in a chiminea and compared it to a fire pit will choose a chiminea as the superior design.

Indoor Wood Stoves and Fireplaces need to burn fully seasoned wood to prevent Creosote buildup – Seasoned Oak is the best. Our Premium Seasoned Oak was split last Winter and has been shed-stored for more than a year.

There are several things to do for your fireplace or wood stove to burn cleanly, efficiently, and safely. The most important way to assure little or no smoke is to use dry, well-seasoned hardwood. Wood with high moisture content creates more smoke. Wood usually takes nine months or longer to become dry enough for use as heating fuel. Never use evergreen wood (from pines or spruces) as they contain resins that can cause chimney fires.

Other advice to keep stoves and fireplaces safe:

Do not burn treated wood. It has chemicals added that can cause damage to the catalytic converters in newer stoves. Remove excess ash from vents and hearth to optimize the fuel/air ratio.

Do not use a wood stove or fireplace to burn trash. Inspect the stove and chimney yearly and have chimney cleansed as needed.

Outdoor Wood Stoves can burn just about anything. They still build up Creosote, but are easily cleaned. We recommend partially seasoned Pine, Poplar, Sweet Gum, or Maple. Seasoned Campfire Wood makes getting a fire started much easier; usually without using any lighter fluid or other harmful chemicals. Our Premium Campfire Wood is split and seasoned for up to 9 months.

Firewood that is fully dried yields the most heat, and is the safest to burn. Firewood should be seasoned to complete dryness under a shelter for at least one full year. The trees cut for firewood this summer will be ready to burn this winter only if fully dried. Dry wood burns efficiently, has fewer insect problems, and will minimize creosote accumulation in your chimney.

Ants, termites, other insects and mice can be a problem if firewood is stored too close to the house, or if infested wood is brought inside. To keep ants, termites, other insects and mice way, firewood should be stored outdoors away from the house and under a shelter or tarp. Keep firewood dry, off the ground, and stacked so air can circulate through the ranks. Avoid storing firewood in the forest where wood-eating insects can infest the logs.

Firewood pricing varies depending on the season. We deliver within 10 miles of our log yard for $25 and we’ll even stack the wood for $25 more.

We removed all the trees, branches, and spent a considerable amount of time raking and blowing pine needles. The stumps were grinded and turned into a natural area. Grinding blows stump chips all over the yard. It can take hours to rake and blow them, creating an attractive natural area.
